How Hard is Las Vegas Water?
Las Vegas water is categorized as very hard.
The concentration of dissolved minerals in a water supply are what cause “hard” or “soft” water.
Las Vegas has two nontoxic minerals that cause hard water concerns:
- Calcium
- Magnesium
These two minerals come from the mineral-dense Colorado River emptying into Lake Mead.

Vegas water has a hardness of 267 parts per million (ppm) or 16 grains per gallon.
For comparison, Denver has 97.5 parts per million or 5.8 grains per gallon.
Washington, DC has 70 to 120 parts per million or 3 – 9 grains per gallon.
Should You Be Concerned?
Aside from mineral buildup on fixtures, lack of soap lather, and spots on dishes, water hardness isn’t a health risk.
